The offices and shops of One Sophia are developed by Sophia Commercial Pte. Ltd., the joint venture company formed to develop the commercial component of the former Peace Centre and Peace Mansion site.

The Company Behind One Sophia

Sophia Commercial Pte. Ltd. is named as developer in the particulars of the development, alongside its sister company for the residences. SLB Development announced to the Singapore Exchange on 16 February 2023 that the shareholders’ agreement for Sophia Commercial had been entered into by CEL Development Pte. Ltd., Sing-Haiyi Crystal Pte. Ltd. and Ultra Infinity Pte. Ltd., and Chip Eng Seng Corporation, whose wholly owned subsidiary CEL is, announced the same agreements together with the construction, development management and bank financing arrangements.

The project account is held with DBS Bank in the name of the two Sophia companies as a joint venture, and the land is mortgaged in favour of DBS Bank, by the developer’s particulars.

One Sophia Design Team

ADDP Architects and studioMilou conceptualised the building. The brochure credits them with the cantilevered glass boxes and bronze fins of the facade and with the curved, suspended garden that sweeps across the corner, an illusion of a suspended forest. studioMilou’s design studies show the office units beneath that curve, their glass walls following its slope.

Tinderbox Landscape Studio designed the gardens. The developer’s factsheet describes a landscape inspired by the tranquillity of forests, with towering trees, ferns and woodland plants, and vertical layers of gardens that serve as communal spaces for the people who work there.

The Name and Place of One Sophia

The name is the address: One Sophia stands at 1 Sophia Road, on the road that climbs from Selegie Road to Mount Sophia, the hill of conserved shophouses, Mount Emily Park and former school buildings that the brochure calls a timeless legacy. The brochure plays on the first two letters, SO, through its pages: so vibrant, so cultural, so connected.
